MediaTek Dimensity 9300 goes official with all big cores

4x Cortex-X4 + 4x Cortex-A720!

Last month, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SOC was launched by Qualcomm, featuring the Cortex-X4 prime core, the Adreno 750 GPU, and incredible AI performance. Today, MediaTek announced the Dimensity 9300 SOC, the company’s newest flagship chip and the competitor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The CPU in this SOC is special and unique because it is the first smartphone chip with all big cores!

To understand it in simpler words, let’s take an example of the Dimensity 9200. The octa-core CPU of the Dimensity 9200 had one Cortex-X3 core, three Cortex-A715 cores, and four Cortex-A510 cores. This is something called the “big.LITTLE” architecture, which simply means there are “LITTLE” cores for maximum power efficiency and “big” cores for best performance. So, in the case of the Dimensity 9200, there were four “LITTLE” cores, the four Cortex-A510s. The other four cores were for performance.

Returning to the Dimensity 9300, it still has an octa-core CPU, but all the eight cores are “big” cores. So, there are four Cortex-X4 cores clocked at up to 3.25GHz and four Cortex-A720 cores clocked at up to 2.0GHz. The result is 15% better single-core performance and 40% better multi-core performance over the predecessor.

Now, power efficiency is something that is going to be something to look forward to when the phones with Dimensity 9300 are available.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9300 is manufactured on the 3rd gen 4nm TSMC process. MediaTek says there are up to 33% more multi-core power savings than the previous generation’s CPU. This is also the first smartphone SOC with LPDDR5T RAM support. This is the fastest mobile DRAM with speeds up to 9.6Gbps.

The GPU is also unique. It is the Immortalis G720, a 12-core GPU with up to 46% better peak performance and 40% more power savings than the previous generation.

The MediaTek APU 790 is the world’s 1st hardware-based Generative AI Engine that is 45% more power efficient and the first to support on-device LoRA Fusion.

Other features include MediaTek Imagiq 990, MediaTek MiraVision 990, WiFi 7 support, 8K 30fps video recording, 4K display support up to 120Hz, etc.
