Snapdragon 765G vs Snapdragon 855 – Full Comparison

Last year in December, Qualcomm unveiled its first 5G SOC under the Snapdragon 7-series, the Snapdragon 765/765G. As the name suggests, the Snapdragon 765G is aimed at gaming as well & offers some extra features for just that. Now, the Snapdragon 765G is a 7nm SOC just like Snapdragon 855 of last year so it would be interesting to compare Snapdragon 765G vs Snapdragon 855.

Obviously the Snapdragon 855 is going to beat the Snapdragon 765G in almost all the scenarios but still, let’s see how close they get to each other in every aspect.

Before talking about each feature in detail, it is worth mentioning that the Snapdragon 765G was announced in December 2019 whereas the Snapdragon 855 in December 2018. So, the Snapdragon 765G is a new SOC from Qualcomm whereas Snapdragon 855 is more than a year old now.

CPU

QUALCOMM SNAPDRAGON 765G VS SNAPDRAGON 855

Starting off with the CPU, the Snapdragon 855 features an octa-core Kryo 485 CPU whereas the Snapdragon 765G has an octa-core Kryo 475 CPU. Just by looking at the names, you can say that there isn’t much difference. But, when we talk about each CPU in detail, then you will know how much they differ from each other.

The Snapdragon 855 was the flagship SOC of last year, and so, the CPU features 1x Kryo 485 Gold core clocked at up to 2.84GHz, 3x Kryo 485 Gold cores clocked at 2.42GHz & 4x Kryo 485 Silver cores clocked at 1.80GHz. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 765G’s CPU features 1x Kryo 475 Prime core clocked at up to 2.4GHz, 1x Kryo 475 Gold core at 2.2GHz & 6x Kryo 475 Silver cores at 1.8GHz.

So, while the Snapdragon 855’s CPU has four power-efficient cores, the count in six in case of Snapdragon 765G since it is a mid-range SOC.

GPU

QUALCOMM SNAPDRAGON 765G VS SNAPDRAGON 855

Let’s talk about the GPU now because that’s one of the important things to consider when talking about Snapdragon 765G vs Snapdragon 855 since they’re made for the superb gaming experience. The Snapdragon 765G has Adreno 620 GPU while the Snapdragon 855 has Adreno 640 GPU. The Snapdragon 765G is a chipset for gaming; hence it has an overclocked GPU which delivers almost 18% better performance than the Snapdragon 765.

Still, the Adreno 640 is ahead in terms of the performance even when the Adreno 620 GPU of Snapdragon 765G is overclocked.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

QUALCOMM SNAPDRAGON 855 VS SNAPDRAGON 765G

The Snapdragon 855 was launched as the first Qualcomm SOC to be based on the 7nm LPP process, which resulted in much better power efficiency as well as performance. The Snapdragon 765G is based on 7nm process as well, but the catch here is that it is the new 7nm LPP EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) process.

This means the Snapdragon 765G is based on a better manufacturing process than the Snapdragon 855. Hence, this gives it an edge when you consider things like power-efficiency since the Snapdragon 765G also has less powerful CPU then Snapdragon 855, which means it will consume less power.

5G SUPPORT

QUALCOMM SNAPDRAGON 855 VS SNAPDRAGON 765G

The biggest feature of Snapdragon 765 & 765G is not the fact that they’re based on 7nm LPP EUV process. It is the fact that they are the first 5G SOCs under the Snapdragon 7-series. They have an integrated 5G modem, something that even Snapdragon 865 doesn’t have. It is the Qualcomm X52 5G Modem.

Qualcomm has not yet launched any Snapdragon 8-series SOC with an integrated modem so to have 5G support, brands have to use a 5G modem separately along with the SOC. For example, Snapdragon 855 + X50 5G modem.

If we keep integrated 5G modem aside & talk just about 5G support, both Snapdragon 765G & Snapdragon 855 have that. Still, due to Integrated 5G modem, Snapdragon 765G takes the lead here.

DISPLAY SUPPORT

It won’t be hard to guess which SOC wins in this case. It’s the Snapdragon 855 SOC since this chipset can support a higher resolution display than what the Snapdragon 765G can support. While the Snapdragon 765G SOC supports up to a Quad-HD+ display with 60Hz refresh rate, the Snapdragon 855 supports up to a 4K display.

This is pretty obvious because we don’t see mid-range phones with Quad-HD or 4K displays. So, there is no need to make mid-range SOCs support such high-resolution displays.
