MediaTek Dimensity 8300 launched with a 60% faster GPU

The performance is reportedly close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2!

MediaTek’s 8000 series includes some of the most powerful chipsets for mid-range smartphones. The Dimensity 8200 SOC was seen in many phones this year, including the Redmi Note 12T Pro, Xiaomi Civi 3, iQOO Neo 7, iQOO Neo 7 SE, Vivo V29 Pro, etc. Today, the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 was officially unveiled, and this new chipset brings significant upgrades in every department.

The chip is built on the TSMC’s 2nd generation 4nm process. The octa-core CPU features ARM’s latest v9 cores. There are four Cortex-A715 cores clocked at up to 3.35 GHz and four Cortex-A510 cores clocked at up to 2.2 GHz. This is a significant upgrade over the Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores in the Dimensity 8200’s CPU. MediaTek claims up to 20% better CPU performance and 30% better power efficiency than the Dimensity 8200.

Speaking of the GPU, it is the Arm Mali-G615, compared to the Arm Mali-G610. The new GPU offers up to 60% better performance and 55% better power efficiency than the predecessor.

Another big upgrade is in the APU, or AI Processing Unit. The Dimensity 8300 chip has the MediaTek APU 780 versus the APU 580. This brings full generative AI support to this SOC. This APU has the same architecture as the Dimensity 9300’s APU, resulting in a 2x improvement in FP16 (Half-precision floating point format) and INT computation and up to 3.3x better AI performance than the Dimensity 8200.

The ISP is the MediaTek Imagiq 980, which sounds like a big upgrade over the Dimensity 8200’s Imagiq 785 ISP.

MediaTek Dimensity 8300 supports LPDDR5X RAM with up to 8533Mbps frequency and UFS 4.0 MCQ storage. This is also a significant upgrade over the LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage support for the Dimensity 8200. The new chip also supports Bluetooth 5.4 (versus 5.3).

An interesting update is in the display support, as the Dimensity 8300 supports Full-HD+ displays with up to 180Hz refresh rate, compared to 165Hz for the Dimensity 8200.

Speaking of smartphones with this chipset, Redmi has announced that the upcoming K70E is powered by the Dimensity 8300-ULTRA SOC, and the phone scores over 1.5 million points on the AnTuTu benchmark, which is impressive.
