Xiaomi-backed Black Shark launched three new phones in China today under the Black Shark 5 series named the Black Shark 5, 5 RS, and the 5 Pro. In this article, we will talk about the Black Shark 5 RS which sits between the other two phones in terms of features and pricing. Interestingly, the phone offers both Snapdragon 888 and 888+ to choose from. So, there are two storage options, and one has Snapdragon 888, whereas the other offers Snapdragon 888+.

Black Shark 5 RS

Design-wise, the phone comes in two colors, and the Yellow color looks quite fascinating, at least in the renders. The back panel has all sorts of brandings, texts, and lines to give it that gaming-phone vibe. Now the design is not the same for both color options, so while the Black color variant has the Black Shark logo in the center, it is present in the bottom left corner in the case of the Yellow color variant.

Black Shark 5 RS has the same mechanical pop-up shoulder triggers that we have seen in some Redmi and Black Shark phones in the past. The fingerprint scanner sits on the right side, and there are stereo speakers. The 3.5mm headphone jack is also present, and it is on the bottom.

On the front, there is a flat panel with a hole punch in the center. It is a 6.67-inch 144Hz E4 AMOLED with up to 720Hz touch-response rate and support for MEMC tech. The peak brightness of the panel is 1,300 nits, and it is an FHD+ panel. The panel also has two pressure-sensitive regions that can be used in various games if required to perform different operations.

As mentioned in the beginning, there are two variants and also different SOCs for those two variants. The 8GB RAM variant has Snapdragon 888, whereas the 12GB RAM variant has Snapdragon 888+. The RAM standard is LPDDR5 (6400Mbps), and there is a UFS 3.1 + SSD combo, just like the Lenovo Legion Y90 gaming phone.

The battery size is 4,500mAh, and there is support for 120W fast charging.

There is an 8MP ultrawide camera with 120-degree FOV and finally, a 5MP macro camera. There is support for 4K 60fps video recording and 960fps slow-motion video recording at 720p. For selfies, you get a 20MP sensor.

Out of the box, Black Shark 5 RS runs on MIUI-based JOYUI 12.8.

Finally, speaking of the pricing, Black Shark 5 RS comes in two colors and two storage options too. Here is the pricing for China –

  • 8GB + 128GB – ¥3299 (~$519)
