Sony Xperia 1 VI renders reveal a familiar design

The tall aspect ratio is gone!

In May last year, we got the Sony Xperia 1 V, the flagship Sony smartphone of 2023. The phone featured the “Exmor T for mobile” sensor, which, as per the company, offered 2x better low-light performance than the predecessor. As it was a flagship phone of last year, it had the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SOC under the hood.

The Sony Xperia 1 VI is launching in the coming months, and while Sony is yet to reveal anything, we now have the renders of the phone, giving us our first look at the design. The renders were shared by Android Headlines.

The renders reveal familiar design language, so the phone has a triple camera setup on the rear, placed in the top left corner. The camera module has the “ZEISS T*” text on it. There is no change in the camera module design compared to last year’s phone and there are also reports that Sony is keeping the same camera setup this year as the predecessor. On the front, the selfie camera is not placed in a notch or hole punch, but rather in the top bezel.

The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the power button, and there is a camera shutter button on the right. The phone also retains the 3.5mm headphone jack.

One thing that might not be noticeable in the renders is that the phone is shorter than last year. The display is 6.5-inches, the same size as last year. But, the dimensions are 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.4mm, meaning the phone is almost 3mm shorter than the Xperia 1 V, despite having the same sized screen.

This means the phone no longer has the 21:9 display that we have seen on Sony phones in the past few years. Instead, the phone has a display with an aspect ratio of around 19.5:9, similar to other smartphones on the market. The phone is wider than the predecessor by almost 3.5mm.

This change will get mixed reactions because some Sony fans love the tall aspect ratio of Sony smartphones, which is perfect for media consumption.

Another change reported by some sources is the display resolution. Unlike previous Sony flagships which had a 4K display, the Sony Xperia 1 VI is reported to have a 2K or Quad-HD+ panel.

There is no information on the specifications, but we should get some details soon.
