Redmi Note 7 with Snapdragon 660 & 48MP camera launched at 999 Yuan

In 2018, Xiaomi launched some really good products, but one thing that we missed was the old Xiaomi that used to launched phones with great specifications at a price that no other company would launch. Last year companies like Realme, Asus, Motorola, Nokia etc. gave a tough competition to Xiaomi and even launched better phones that what Xiaomi offered in the same price segment.

Today, the Redmi Note 7 launched as the first smartphone under the new ‘Redmi’ brand from Xiaomi. And looking at the pricing and the specs, it looks like the Note 7 just destroyed every lower mid-range phone in the market. In a nutshell, you are getting Snapdragon 660, a 4,000mAh battery, Type-C port, Glass back, Metal frame, 48MP primary rear camera and more at a starting price of just 999 Yuan or $150.

Despite having a price tag of a budget phone, the build quality is top notch. There is 2.5D Glass back & this is the first time we are getting a glass back in any Redmi Note series phone from Xiaomi. On the front, there is Corning Gorilla Glass 5, so that’s again an amazing thing for a phone at this price.

For the first time, we are getting USB Type-C port on a Redmi Note device. And unlike the Mi A2, Xiaomi didn’t skip the headphone jack as it is placed on the top. Just like the headphone jack, the IR Blaster is also there on top. Good job, Xiaomi!

On the rear, there are dual cameras placed in the same way as on the Xiaomi Mi Play. The fingerprint scanner is also placed on the back. We will talk about the camera specs later in this article as the camera is one of the most interesting things about the Redmi Note 7. Overall, Xiaomi nailed it with the design of Redmi Note 7. There is almost nothing to complain considering that you are paying just 999 Yuan as the starting price.

Coming to the specifications, the Note 7 has a 6.3-inch Full-HD+ LTPS in-cell display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The brightness goes up to 450 nits and the contrast ratio is 1500:1. As mentioned above, the display is protected with the Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The Redmi Note 7 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, and unlike the phones like Realme 2 Pro or the Zenfone Max Pro M2, the processor in the Note 7 is not underclocked. It is the 2.2GHz Snapdragon 660, so that’s again a good thing to know. There is 3/4/6GB RAM and 32/64GB internal storage. The storage is expandable, but there is a hybrid SIM slot so you cannot use both the SIM cards if you want to add a micro SD card.

Like every Note series phone, the Redmi Note 7 has a big battery underneath. It is a 4,000mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 4, i.e., 18W Fast Charging.

Let’s talk about the cameras now. The Redmi Note 7 has dual cameras on the back that include a primary 48MP Samsung GM1 sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 5MP depth sensor. In the low light situations, the camera uses Pixel binning i.e., it combines four pixels into one, resulting in an effective photo size of 12MP with 1.6-micron pixels. There is no doubt this camera will blow every other smartphone camera in this price segment out of the water.

On the front, the phone has a 13MP single camera with all the features like Portrait Mode, Face Unlock etc.

Finally, talking about the pricing of Redmi Note 7, Xiaomi simply nailed it. Here is the pricing detail –

  • 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM –  999 Yuan ($147)
  • 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM –  1,199 Yuan ($176)
  • 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM –  1,399 Yuan ($206)

The phone will launch in other markets outside of China in a few months so let’s hope the price remains the same for other markets as well. What is your take on the pricing and the specifications of the Redmi Note 7? Do let us know via the comments section.

  1. hi! in your previous article(comparing kirin 710 and sd660) you’ve mentioned that tha sd660 is only capable of supporting single camera(possibly rear) up to 25mp,? i’m just a bit overwhelmed of this bang-for-the-buck device with specs usually seen in more expensive units. Is there a trick or interpolation on the 48mp rear cam of redmi note 7? planning to buy this 😁

    1. It’s a 48MP sensor but the thing is it produces photos equivalent to 12MP by combining the pixels. That’s the real thing behind all this.
