While companies like Oppo & Xiaomi have already announced that they are working on the in-display camera tech, ZTE surprised everyone by launching the first “commercially available” smartphone featuring an in-display selfie camera. It will be available to buy in China from September 10th & the price starts at 2,198 Yuan or $322 since it is not a high-end flagship but rather a mid-ranger.
The USP of Axon 20 5G is its in-display selfie camera so let’s talk about that first. Since the selfie camera is placed under the display, ZTE had to ensure that the amount of light which reaches the sensor is sufficient. So, for that, there is a highly transparent film on the screen layers, which ensures that sufficient light reaches the camera. Also, ZTE had to do extra work to make sure the pixels around the camera match the pixels in the rest of the display.
As Xiaomi revealed recently, one of the issues it fixed in its 3rd generation in-display camera tech is the Quality of images. Similar to that, ZTE had to optimize the images taken by this in-display camera using a new post-processing algorithm.
While the renders might show that the in-display camera is perfectly hidden when not in use, that’s not the case in real life. You can see the distortion around the camera while using the phone & it is more visible when there is a light background. Still, it is the first phone with this tech to launch commercially so we cannot complain much.
Anyways, the ZTE Axon 20 5G has a huge 6.92-inch 10-bit OLED panel on the front with 90Hz refresh-rate & 1080p+ resolution. Since there is an OLED panel, the fingerprint scanner is there under the display. Axon 20 is a mid-range device featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SOC paired with 6/8GB RAM & 128/256GB storage.
The Quad camera setup on the back includes a primary 64-megapixel camera, a secondary 8 Megapixel ultrawide, a 2 Megapixel Macro & a 2 Megapixel depth sensor. There is a 32-megapixel in-display selfie camera.
