A year ago, Xiaomi launched its 2nd generation foldable phone, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. It was launched as one of the slimmest folding phones, measuring just 5.4mm when unfolded. Today, Xiaomi launched the successor in China, the Mix Fold 3. Thanks to an upgraded hinge mechanism, the phone brings an even slimmer form factor than the predecessor.
The hinge has 198 components and takes 17% less space than Mix Fold 2’s hinge. When unfolded, the thickness is just 5.26mm. When folded, the thickness is 10.89mm.
And if you think the battery size is probably smaller than last year, then you are wrong. It is the other way around. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 has a bigger battery than the Mix Fold 2. The reason for a slimmer form factor and still having a bigger battery than the predecessor is the “vertically stacked motherboard” that the company has developed. In simple words, Xiaomi could place the components in a smaller area, reducing the phone’s thickness and making room for a bigger battery.
This year, there is a different camera module design and an increase in the camera count. Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 gets a quad camera system on the rear, compared to a triple camera setup. The camera setup also includes a periscope lens, making it one of the few foldables in the market with a periscope camera. Speaking of the camera setup in detail, the primary camera has a 54MP Sony IMX800 sensor with OIS and an f/1.77 lens.
The ultrawide camera has a 12MP sensor, f/2.2 lens, and 120-degree FOV. The third camera has a 10MP sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and a telephoto lens, offering a 3.2X optical zoom and OIS. The fourth camera has a periscope lens with f/2.92 aperture, offering 5X optical zoom and OIS.
Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 can shoot up to 8K 24fps videos and supports Dolby Vision HDR recording.
As for the displays, Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 has a 6.56-inch outer display, a 120Hz LTPO E6 AMOLED panel with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. The peak brightness is 2600 nits. The foldable display is an 8.03-inch 120Hz LTPO E6 AMOLED panel.
Under the hood, the phone has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. The battery is 4,800mAh, and the phone supports 67W wired + 50W wireless charging. The Type-C port is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port.
