Xiaomi Mi A3 launched in India, price starts at Rs 12,999

A month ago, the Xiaomi Mi A3 launched in Spain & today, the company launched in the Indian market, the second biggest market for Xiaomi after China. It is the latest offering from Xiaomi with Android One & the successor to the Mi A2 of last year. Unlike last year, we are getting only one phone & there is no “Pro” model as rumored. The Mi A3 fixes a lot of issues with Mi A2 like a headphone jack, expandable storage, AMOLED display, big battery etc.

XIAOMI MI A3 – DESIGN & SPECIFICATIONS

For the first time, we are getting a premium Glass build in the A series from Xiaomi. There is a “Dynamic Holographic Design”, thanks to several layers like the glass, Nano-level holographic pattern, Reflective Coating, Color layer etc. There are three colour options & interestingly, each one has a different design or pattern on the back. So that’s sweet.

There are triple rear cameras placed vertically & there is no rear-facing fingerprint scanner since the Mi A3 has an in-display fingerprint scanner. This also means the phone has a Super AMOLED display on the front. It doesn’t have a Full-Screen design as there is a waterdrop notch that houses the single front camera.

The USB Type-C port & headphone jack are placed on the bottom, so Xiaomi didn’t skip the headphone jack this time like last year’s Mi A2. a

The display on the front is a 6.08-inch Super AMOLED HD+ (1560 x 720) panel with 19.5:9 aspect ratio & Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the rear as well & it also covers the camera module. The combination of Super AMOLED & 720p resolution is weird as last year, we had an FHD+ panel on the Mi A2. So, Xiaomi did some cost-cutting in the display section.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 has a triple camera setup that includes a primary 48MP Sony IMX 586 sensor with f/1.79 aperture lens, 1.6μm 4-in-1 Super Pixel & PDAF. There is a secondary ultra-wide-angle 8MP camera with 118-degree FOV & a third 2MP depth sensor. It is a good thing that brands are now going for ultra-wide-angle cameras on budget phones as well.

The camera on the front is a 32MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture & the phone supports AI Face Unlock as well. Some camera features include AI Scene Detection, 4K 30fps video via rear camera, EIS, AI Portrait Mode etc.

Under the hood, the Xiaomi Mi A3 has a 2.0GHz 11nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SOC that’s the same SOC which powers the recently launched Realme 5. It is an upgrade to Snapdragon 660 & features a better GPU but a slower CPU, maybe for better power efficiency. The Mi A3 has 4/6GB LPDDR4X RAM & 64/128GB UFS 2.1 storage. The storage is expandable up to 256GB.

Finally, there is a big 4,030mAh battery & the phone supports 18W Fast Charging as well. It is a shame that you get a 10W charger in the box. Android 9 Pie runs out of the box & since it is an Android One phone, the experience is stock with a couple of Xiaomi apps.
