Apart from its normal flagships in the ‘S’ and ‘Note’ series, Samsung likes to launch a flagship clamshell phone in China with a pretty hefty price tag. Last year, it was the Samsung W2018 and this year, it’s the Samsung W2019. The phone retains the clamshell form factor from its predecessors and comes with some extra features. This is a phone for those who want a premium device with a clamshell form factor.
Like the predecessor, the Samsung W2019 has two displays. One can be used when you use the phone without opening it and second can be used when you want to have physical keys including the number pad, along with the display. The device is built like a tank, and you will hardly notice anything except metal on the outer side. The displays are raised a bit and slightly curved on the sides.
The fingerprint scanner is now moved to the right that also works as the power button. The volume rockers and the dedicated Bixby button are placed on the left. The phone has a USB Type-C port on the bottom but despite being so thick, it doesn’t feature a headphone jack.
The Samsung W2019 has two displays, both of which are 4.2-inch Super AMOLED Full-HD panels with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Since it’s a flagship phone from the company, the Samsung W2019 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, along with 6GB RAM and 128/256GB internal storage.
The storage is expandable up to 512GB. There is a 3,070mAh battery underneath that hopefully supports Fast Charging via USB Type-C port. Did we mention that this is USB 3.1 Gen 1?
Coming to those cameras, the Samsung W2019 has a dual camera setup on the rear similar to the Galaxy Note 9. So, the primary is a 12MP sensor with dual Aperture (f/1.5 and f/2.4). The secondary is a 12MP telephoto lens with 2X Optical Zoom. The rear camera has Optical Image Stabilization, AF, 4K video recording and 960fps super slow motion recording at 720p. On the front, there is an 8MP camera with f/2.0 aperture.
Android 8.1.0 Oreo runs out of the box with a custom skin on top that is exclusive for the clamshell phones from Samsung.
Like last year’s W2018, the Samsung W2019 will be priced above 15,000 Yuan or more than $2000. The company hasn’t yet announced the official pricing.
