It is not wrong to say that Samsung is leading the foldable smartphone segment with its Z Fold & Z Flip series. We have already seen four generations of Samsung’s foldable phones, one of the biggest reasons no other brand has the same influence in the foldable segment as Samsung. This year, we are getting the fifth generation foldables from the company, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 & Galaxy Z Flip 5. While the launch is taking place in Q3 2023, the renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are now here, shared by OnLeaks in collaboration with SmartPrix.
The renders reveal little to no design upgrade this year compared to the Z Fold 4. The only noticeable design change is the LED flash placement on the back. Instead of placing it in the camera module, the flash is outside. And well, that’s pretty much all that’s different on the outside.
When unfolded, the phone’s dimensions are 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.3mm, whereas when folded, the dimensions are 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.5mm. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is 14.2-15.8 mm when folded. The reason for this reduced thickness, when the phone is folded, could be the new hinge mechanism. It is reported that Samsung is using a new “droplet” style hinge mechanism in the Galaxy Z Fold 5 that should reduce the gap when the phone is folded.
The screen sizes are the same: a 6.2-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch foldable display. We are expecting thinner bezels, however.
There is no information on the spec sheet, but Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to launch with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 SOC (not yet announced).
