Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 – Here’s our first look

That's a pretty large cover display!

Recently, we got our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 via the unofficial renders shared by OnLeaks. The renders revealed little to no design change from the last year’s Z Fold 4. Now, OnLeaks is back with another set of renders, giving us our first look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. These renders were shared in collaboration with MediaPeanut.

The images above show that the Galaxy Z Flip is getting a significant design upgrade this year. The cover display on the Z Flip 5 is huge, with a size of around 3.4 inches. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 had a tiny 1.9-inch cover display for comparison. Among all the foldable clamshell phones on the market, the Z Flip 5 has the largest cover display. The Vivo X Flip has a 3-inch display, the Oppo Find N2 Flip has a 3.26-inch display, Motorola Razr 2022 has a 2.7-inch display, and the Huawei Pocket S has a 1.04-inch display.

The display shape is also unique. It is not a square or rectangular, or even a circular display. Instead, Samsung went for a “folder” shaped display on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The top part of this display may be used as a status bar, like on normal displays.

The folding display inside has a hole punch cutout, so Samsung is not yet going for the under-display selfie camera on its Flip phone. The sides are flat, and the fingerprint sensor is on the right, doubling as a power button. The internal display size remains unchanged from last year, 6.7 inches. When unfolded, the phone is 6.7mm thick, compared to 6.9mm in the case of Z Flip 4.  We saw the same with the Galaxy Z Fold 5, slimmer than the last year’s Z Fold 4 when unfolded, reportedly due to the new hinge mechanism.

So, we expect the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 also to have the new hinge mechanism.

The spec sheet is not yet known, but last year, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was launched with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SOC, so this year, we are expecting top-of-the-line SOC for the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
