Samsung Galaxy M31s launched with Infinity-O AMOLED display

Five months after the launch of Samsung Galaxy M31, the company launched Galaxy M31s today in the Indian market. The main highlights of the phone include its design, the cameras & the display. While the Galaxy M31 started at Rs 14,999 (price increased now) when it launched, the Samsung Galaxy M31s starts at Rs 20,499.

So with this price tag, it only makes sense to buy this device if you’re looking for a good Samsung device & don’t want to spend money on phones from Chinese brands like Redmi or Realme.

SAMSUNG GALAXY M31s – DESIGN & SPECIFICATIONS

As mentioned above, the design is one of the highlights of this device. For the very first time on any Galaxy M series phone, there is an Infinity-O display which means the Galaxy M31s no longer has a notch that was there on the Galaxy M31. Instead, there is a small punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera.

Also, the edges of the phone are less rounded, which gives it a more premium look when compared to the M31. On the back, there is a rectangular camera module with an L-shaped Quad camera setup. Just like the M31, the Samsung Galaxy M31s is made out of plastic (or Glasstic, as Samsung calls it).

The Galaxy M31s features a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED 20:9 display with Full-HD+ resolution & a peak brightness of 420 nits. Thanks to minimal bezels, the screen-to-body ratio is over 90%. In this particular price segment, it is hard to find a phone with a punch-hole design & an AMOLED panel. Either there is a notch, or there is an LCD panel.

Now, while the Galaxy M31s has an AMOLED panel, the fingerprint scanner is on the right side rather than being under the display.

Everything seems perfect about this phone unless we talk about the performance. The Samsung Galaxy M31s has the Exynos 9611 SOC & yes, this is the same chip that powered not only this year’s M31 but also last year’s M30s. In fact, the same chip powers the Galaxy M21, which is priced under Rs 15,000!

Exynos 9611 is a good SOC for phones under Rs 15,000, but for a device that starts at Rs 20,499, Exynos 9611 is definitely a big disappointment. Anyways, there is 6/8GB LPDDR4X RAM paired with 128GB storage which is expandable up to 512GB.

The cameras are upgraded as well. While the Samsung Galaxy M31 featured the 64 Megapixel Samsung sensor, the Galaxy M31s has the 64 Megapixel Sony IMX682 sensor which is definitely a big upgrade. That’s not it! While the M31 had an 8 Megapixel ultrawide lens, the Galaxy M31s has a 12 Megapixel 123-degree ultrawide camera. The rest of the two cameras are the same, i.e., a 5 Megapixel Macro & a 5 Megapixel depth sensor.

There is also the Single Take Mode using which you can take multiple images & videos with just one tap on the shutter button so that you can later choose the best ones.

On the front, there is a 32 Megapixel camera for selfies.

The Galaxy M31s retains the massive 6,000mAh battery of the Galaxy M31 & adds 25W Fast Charging support on top of that. This is the first time any Galaxy M series phone has launched with 25W Fast Charging. Also, you get the 25W Charger in the box, so that’s nice. OneUI 2.1 based on Android 10 runs out of the box.
