In December last year, the Red Magic 8 Pro series was launched with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and a boxy design. Later this year, we got the Red Magic 8S Pro series featuring an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Today, the company launched the Red Magic 9 Pro series in China with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Both the phones look identical and there is a lot to talk about both of them. The only difference between the two is the charging speed, battery size, and the RAM.

Red Magic 9 Pro Series

Design-wise, the Red Magic 9 Pro series comes with one big upgrade. There is no longer a camera bump on the back, meaning the back is completely flat, just like the front and the sides. What’s more interesting is that the phones have the same thickness as their predecessors – 8.9mm. Red Magic has done some impressive engineering under the hood to not only keep the thickness the same but also get rid of the camera bump.

All this becomes even more impressive when you realize the Red Magic 9 Pro has a 6,500mAh battery, bigger than the Red Magic 8 Pro’s 6,000mAh cell. Do note that the Red Magic 9 Pro+ has a smaller 5,500mAh battery. The reason for a smaller battery on the Pro+ model is the charging speed. The Pro model supports 80W fast charging, while the Pro+ model gets 165W fast charging.

There is an ICE 13 cooling system with 10 layers and a large 10182mm² vapor chamber. And ofcourse, how can we forget the cooling fan that can spin at up to 22,000 RPM and has 30% improved thermal conductivity.

The display on both phones is a 6.8-inch BOE Q9+ 10-bit OLED with up to 120Hz refresh rate, 1600 nits peak brightness, and a 2480 x 1116 pixels resolution. The panel has a 960Hz touch-sampling rate (2000Hz instantaneous touch-sampling rate).  The selfie camera is placed under the display and Red Magic has been doing this for a few years now.

Under the hood, both phones have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset but while the Red Magic 9 Pro has up to 12GB LPDDR5X RAM, the 9 Pro+ offers 16GB or 24GB LPDDR5X RAM. The storage options are 256GB and 512GB for the Pro model, while you can get up to 1TB of storage in the Pro+ model.

The cameras are not the best but still good on paper. The dual camera setup on the back has a primary 50MP Samsung GN5 sensor with OIS and a 50MP Samsung JN1 sensor for the ultrawide camera. The selfie camera has a 32MP sensor.

The phones have stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, triple microphones, and an under-display fingerprint sensor.

Finally, both phones run on Red Magic OS 9.0, based on Android 14.
