In December last year, Red Magic 8 Pro & Red Magic 8 Pro+ were launched in China, featuring a completely new design and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Today, the brand launched the 8S Pro series in China. There are two phones this time, too – Red Magic 8S Pro & Red Magic 8S Pro+. This time, the USP is the performance since these two phones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SOC with a 3.36GHz CPU. The normal Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset has a CPU clocked at up to 3.2GHz. The GPU frequency is also increased from 680MHz to 719MHz.
Interestingly, the Galaxy S23 series uses the “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy” SOC, which has a CPU clocked at up to 3.36GHz. So, Nubia is probably using the same chipset without indicating the exclusivity of using this SOC, which Samsung did with the naming.
Design-wise, there is no difference between the Pro & Pro+. Both phones are offered in three color options – Black, Silver & a Transparent version. The design is similar to the last year’s Red Magic 8 Pro series but looks a bit cleaner due to lesser text.
One noticeable change is the RGB light for the cooling fan. In the Red Magic 8 Pro series, the RGB light was only there for the transparent version, but this time, all three color options get an RGB light.
On the front, there is the same display as last year – a 6.8-inch AMOLED with a 2480 x 1116 pixels resolution, 10-bit color depth, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and 1300 nits peak brightness. The screen-to-body ratio is 93.7%, and there is an under-display selfie camera.
The battery size & the charging speed is also the same – a 6,000mAh battery for 8S Pro with 80W charging and a 5,000mAh battery for the 8S Pro+ with 165W charging. The camera setup is the same too.
As mentioned in the beginning, both phones get a better-performing Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SOC with a CPU clocked at up to 3.36GHz. Compared to the normal Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, there is a 5% better CPU and 5.7% better GPU performance. For better thermals, there is the new and upgraded ICE 12.0 cooling system.
Both phones feature a 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers.
