Nothing launched its third smartphone today, the Nothing Phone 2a. As the name suggests, this is not a flagship phone like the Nothing Phone 2. Instead, this is the successor to the Nothing Phone 1. What’s interesting is that the Phone 2a has launched at a cheaper price than the Nothing Phone 1. Of course, this also means there are some downgrades over the Phone 1, but the upgrades are a lot.
The biggest upgrade is in the design. The Nothing Phone 2a looks completely different than the previous two phones from the rear. The camera setup is moved to the center, and it is now placed horizontally. The camera module has three LED strips around it, and that’s pretty much it for the glyph interface.
The phone has a similar transparent design language on the back as the company’s other phones.
Unlike the Nothing Phone 1 which had a glass back, the Nothing Phone 2a has a polycarbonate back. The frame is also plastic, unlike the Phone 1, which had an aluminum frame.
The Nothing Phone 2a also misses out on wireless charging, something the Phone 1 had. So, not everything is upgraded, but that’s understandable, considering the company wanted to launch it at a lower price.
Coming back to the upgrades, the Nothing Phone 2a is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset. This SOC is built on the TSMC’s 4nm process, so theoretically, it is more efficient than the Snapdragon 778G+ in the Phone 1 which was built on the 6nm process.
The chip has an octa-core CPU clocked at up to 2.8GHz. Compared to the likes of the Snapdragon 782G or the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, this is a better chipset. Nothing has used a 3200mm² Vapor Chamber for better cooling.
The battery is 5,000mAh, upgraded from 4,500mAh cell in the Nothing Phone 1. The charging is also upgraded to 45W, up from 33W.
The display is larger & brighter than the Phone 1. It is a 6.7-inch flat AMOLED display with a Full-HD+ resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate, 1300 nits peak brightness, 2,160Hz PWM dimming, and 10-bit colors.
Speaking of cameras, the Nothing Phone 2a has two 50MP sensors on the rear. The primary sensor is the Samsung GN9, while the secondary sensor is the Samsung JN1. The primary camera has OIS and EIS. For selfies, the phone has a 32MP Sony IMX615 sensor.
The phone can shoot 4K videos at up to 30fps from the rear camera and up to 1080p 60fps videos from the selfie camera.
Finally, Android 14-based NothingOS 2.5 runs out of the box. The phone will get three OS updates.
