HMD Global recently announced some serious news about the software updates for Nokia devices. All the Nokia devices are powered by Android One and these devices already have the latest Android version, i.e., Pie. In the latest blog post, the company said that it is extending the software support for the mentioned devices, which already have completed the regular two-year software update cycle.
The devices which have been selected by the phone maker are Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3. These smartphones will receive quarterly security updates until the end of their third year since they have been launched.
In the list of receiving security updates, the Nokia 3 is at the top. It will receive its first quarterly security patch in September 2019. For the remaining devices, the security patch will start rolling out from October 2019. However, the important point here to be noted is that the Nokia 6 devices which were sold via Amazon in the USA and India won’t be receiving the security patches.
With the good news, Nokia also has some bad news for Nokia 2 users as it said that Nokia 2 users would not be receiving security patch support after November 2019. Also, security patches will not include any major Android updates.
Quarterly security update switch dates:
- Nokia 5 – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
- Nokia 6** – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
- Nokia 8 – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
*For users of Nokia 2, the security patch support will conclude in November 2019
**For users of Nokia 6 Amazon (USA and India), the security patch support will end in October 2019
