In December last year, Motorola launched the Moto Edge X30 in China as the first smartphone powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Now, Motorola has launched the Moto X40 in the Chinese market, this time with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. There is no “Edge” in the name this time, even though the phone does feature a curved display, something the Moto Edge X30 lacked.

The price starts at ¥3399 in China, which translates to around $490. This makes it cheaper than even the iQOO 11  and the Xiaomi 13, launched recently in China with the same chip. The Moto X40 is now the cheapest phone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Moto X40

Design-wise, the Moto X40 is identical to the Moto X30 Pro except for the camera module design. There is a triple camera setup this time as well, but the arrangement of the cameras is different on the X40. The phone has a 7000-series aluminum frame and a Gorilla Glass Victus back. There is IP68 certification, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, a 3000mm square vapor chamber, an under-display fingerprint scanner, and more. The phone supports wireless charging too.

The only thing this phone lacks is a 3.5mm headphone jack, but that is something almost all flagship phones lack nowadays. It is quite impressive to see Motorola offering almost everything that we see in a premium phone at such an aggressive price.

The chip is Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, paired with the fastest LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. So,m performance-wise, too, there is no cost-cutting. The battery size is 4,600mAh, and there is support for 125W fast wired charging & 15W wireless charging.

The triple camera setup on the rear includes a primary 1/1.56-inch 50MP sensor with OIS, a secondary 50MP sensor with an ultrawide/macro lens, and a third 12MP Sony IMX663 sensor with a 2X telephoto lens. The selfie camera has a 60MP sensor.

There is a 6.7-inch 10-bit OLED display with up to 165Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. Finally, Android 13 runs out of the box with MyUI 5.0.

Moto X40 comes in two colors, and here is the pricing for the Chinese market –

  • 8GB + 128GB – ¥3399 (~$487)
  • 12GB + 256GB – ¥3999 (~$573)
  • 12GB + 512GB – ¥4299 (~$616)
