As expected, the MediaTek Helio P90 was announced in China today, and this chipset comes with some huge improvements over the Helio P70 that is also a quite new processor from the company. While the P90 is still a 12nm chip, it packs a powerful CPU, improved 2nd generation APU, a powerful GPU, and support for ARCore and Google Lens.
In the previous P series processors from MediaTek (like the Helio P60 and P70), we saw a core arrangement that includes four high-performance cores and four power-efficient ones. But, with the MediaTek Helio P90, we have a different arrangement. There are two high-performance ARM Cortex-A75 cores clocked at up to 2.2GHz and six ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at up to 2.0GHz. So, we can say that this chipset is going to be more power efficient than the previous ones since there are more power efficient cores.

Unlike the previous chipsets, the Helio P90 has an IMG PowerVR GM 9446 GPU. This is a completely different and more powerful GPU than what we saw with the previous Helio processors. With a frequency of up to 970MHz, this GPU is 15% powerful than the Mali-G72 MP3 GPU that we have on the Helio P60 and the P70.
The MediaTek Helio P90 is a beast when it comes to the AI capabilities. The company says that the latest APU 2.0 inside the P90 is way powerful than the first generation APU in the Helio P60 and P70. P90 handles the most complex AI apps and tasks while running multiple AI functions at the same time. For the first time, the Helio P90 supports a single rear camera of up to 48 Megapixels. We cannot say if there will be mid-range devices with 48MP sensors next year but who knows!
The chip supports 24MP + 16MP dual camera setup and 480fps super slow-motion videos. Again, there are a ton of AI features for the camera. MediaTek says that the production of the Helio P90 has started and we can expect phones with this processor in Q1 2019.
Well, 2019 is going to be a great year for smartphones as we will see phones with absolutely no bezels, display holes, dual displays, powerful processors, huge storage, impressive cameras and more.
