Huawei has launched the world’s first tri-fold smartphone in China, named the Huawei Mate XT. Unlike regular foldable phones that have a two-fold design where you can either use them in the folded state or the unfolded state, the Mate XT has a tri-fold design. It can turn into a 7.9-inch device when unfolded once and a 10.2-inch device when unfolded twice. The CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu, said that the company has been working on this for the past five years.

Huawei Mate XT

This is the most premium foldable phone that Huawei has ever launched, so it is no surprise that the design is stunning. The phone comes in two colors, both having a gold-colored frame. There is an octagon-shaped camera module on the rear with a triple camera setup and an LED flash. The back has the “ULTIMATE DESIGN” branding alongside the company’s logo. There is a leather finish on the rear.

When unfolded, we are looking at a 6.4-inch 10-bit 120Hz LTPO OLED with a 2232 × 1008 pixels resolution, and 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. In the dual-screen state, the phone has a 7.9-inch display with a 2232 × 2048 pixels resolution. Finally, in the triple-screen state, we are looking at a huge 10.2-inch screen with a 2232 × 3184 pixels resolution. The aspect ratio is 16:11 and the screen-to-body ratio is 92%.

There is a hole punch cutout for the selfie camera in the foldable display.

The camera setup on the Huawei Mate XT is impressive on paper. There are three cameras on the rear. The primary camera has a 50MP sensor with a 10-stop variable aperture lens (f/1.4-f/4.0) and OIS support. The ultrawide camera has a 12MP sensor with an f/2.2 lens. Finally, there is a 5.5x periscope telephoto camera with a 12MP sensor and OIS. The selfie camera has an 8MP sensor.

The phone features a 5,600mAh battery and supports 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. There is support for 7.5W reverse wireless charging.

Speaking of the performance, all we know is that it has some unspecified Kirin 9-series chipset with 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage. There is support for satellite communication.

Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, Bluetooth 5.2, an IR blaster, and a stereo speaker setup.

The phone runs on HarmonyOS 4.2 out of the box.
