Two years ago, Huawei launched its first foldable phone named the Mate X at the Mobile World Congress. It featured an outward folding screen, 5G support, Kirin 980 chipset, and more. Later in 2020, Huawei launched the slightly upgraded Mate Xs which featured the Kirin 990 5G. Today, Huawei launched the Mate X2, its third foldable phone which brings massive upgrades over the previous generation such as an inward folding screen, a secondary outer display, Kirin 9000 5G SOC, a 10X Optical Zoom camera, and more.
Huawei Mate X2 will be available in China first, starting February 25th. Speaking of the pricing, it starts at 17,999 Yuan which translates to around $2785 and goes up to 18,999 Yuan or around $2940.
Perhaps the most significant upgrade is the design. Unlike previous generations where we had an outwards folding screen, the Huawei Mate X2 has an inwards folding display which is similar to what we have on the Galaxy Z Fold 2. There is no notch or hole in the inner display because all the cameras are on the outside. This offers an incredible distraction-free experience while using the main display on the inside. But since there is no camera on the inside, this means you cannot use the inner display to, let’s say, video call someone. The company says that it spent over 5 years perfecting the hinge design that the Mate X2 comes with.
The fingerprint scanner is positioned on the right side and it doubles as the power button.
On the outside, there is a secondary display with a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout that has the selfie camera in it. The main camera setup includes four lenses.
Speaking of the specs, the inner display measures 8-inch and has an aspect ratio os 8:7.1. It is an OLED panel with a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixels and 90Hz refresh rate. On the outside, there is a 6.45-inch OLED panel with 21:9 aspect ratio and the same 90Hz refresh rate as the inner one. There is a difference in touch-response rate as while it is 180Hz for the inner screen, it is 240Hz for the outer one.
Under the hood, there is the Kirin 9000 5G SOC which is paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB or 512GB internal storage. Android 10 based EMUI 11 runs out of the box.
Speaking of the cameras on this phone, there is a Quad camera setup on the rear that includes a primary 50 Megapixel 1/1.28” RYYB sensor with Optical Image Stabilization, a 16 Megapixel ultrawide camera which can be used as a macro camera as well, a 12 Megapixel telephoto unit with 3X Optical Zoom and OIS, and finally an 8 Megapixel periscope camera with an RYYB sensor and 10X Optical, 20X Hybrid and up to 100X Digital Magnification.
Underneath, Huawei Mate X2 has a 4,500mAh battery with 55W Fast charging and the company provides the adapter in the box itself along with a Type-C headset and the charging cable.
Well, it is definitely an impressive foldable phone from Huawei which is packed with high-end specs. There is no official word from Huawei on its launch in markers outside China. What do you think of the Mate X2? Do let us know via the comments section below.
