DxOMark selfie scores are out with Google Pixel 3 & Note 9 on top
DxOMark has become a benchmark for the smartphone cameras, and till now, we used to see only the rear cameras on phones being tested by DxOMark. But today, the DxOMark selfie test protocol was launched for the selfie cameras on smartphones since the front cameras are also getting better every year.
The testing process includes shooting approximately 1,500 images and dozens of clips totaling more than two hours of video. Every device is tested in exactly the same way, in identically-configured lab setups, using the same procedures, the same scenes, and the same software and evaluation methodologies. This means that the new front camera protocol is just as reliable and repeatable as our tried and trusted DxOMark Mobile protocol.
So far, most of the popular phones like the PIxel 3, Note 9, iPhone XS Max, Mi Mix 3, Galaxy S9 Plus, Pixel 2, P20 Pro, S8, etc. have been tested. Overall, Google Pixel 3 and the Galaxy Note 9 have the best selfie cameras as per the DxOMark selfie scores as both the devices have an overall selfie score of 92.
Just like the rear camera testing, the selfie score consists of the separate photo and video scores. So, regarding the photo score for the selfie camera(s), the Pixel 3 comes on top with a score of 99, followed by the Note 9 (96), Mi Mix 3(83) and the others.
But regarding the video score, the Galaxy Note 9’s selfie camera comes on top with a score of 86, followed by the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 (85) and the Pixel 3 (83).
As per DxOMark, Google Pixel 3 has a superb focusing mechanism whereas Note 9 has an edge regarding the exposure and the color. Also, the selfies shot by the Pixel 3’s camera have more contrast and cooler white balance than Note 9. In low light, the Pixel 3’s selfie camera performance better with more details but the Note 9’s selfie camera shoots cleaner images which means lesser details.
When it comes to videos from the front camera, Note 9 takes an edge due to a superior stabilization than the Google Pixel 3. In case you are wondering if the Pixel 3’s secondary wide-angle camera has any effects on these scores or not, then it doesn’t. As per DxOMark, testing secondary and tertiary camera modules is not part of their protocol.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 takes great videos from front camera and the video score is more than the Pixel 3.
So, at the time of publishing this article, this is the list of phones with the best selfie cameras as per DxOMark –
