Alongside the Zenfone 8, Asus also launched another flagship phone named the Zenfone 8 Flip. As the name suggests, this one has a Flip Camera, something we have seen earlier on the previous two generations of Zenfone flagships. In our previous post, we talked briefly about the vanilla Zenfpne 8, which is a compact flagship phone. In this article, let’s talk in detail about the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip, a phone that has some upgrades but also some downgrades compared to the regular Zenfone 8.
First thing first, unlike the Zenfone 8, which has a compact form factor, the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip is a large phone, primarily because it has a 6.67-inch display over the 5.9-inch panel of the Zenfone 8. The phone is also pretty heavy at 230 grams, thanks to the big battery and also the Flip Camera. Design-wise, the Zenfone 8 Flip is exactly the same as the Zenfone 7 of last year. There is a flat display upfront with no notch or the hole-punch cutout in it since the rear cameras can be flipped over to be used on the front for selfies. The camera count remains the same as well, i.e., three.
While the phone is bigger and has an extra rear camera compared to the Zenfone 8, Asus went for a downgraded display compared to the regular model. The Zenfone 8 Flip has a 6.67-inch Samsung AMOLED panel with Full-HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. For comparison, the Zenfone 8 has a 120Hz panel. Moreover, the panel gets Gorilla Glass 6 protection compared to Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection in the case of the Zenfone 8.
The Zenfone 8 Flip has the same Snapdragon 888 inside paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. Speaking of the camera setup, there are three cameras on the back. The primary shooter has a 64 Megapixel Sony IMX686 sensor which surprisingly doesn’t have OIS like on the regular model. Then there is a 12 Megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor for ultrawide/macro shots and finally, an 8 Megapixel telephoto lens with 3X Optical Zoom. The camera module gets the Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
Like last year, the Flip Camera offers a lot of flexibility while using the cameras such as Auto Panorama, Quick Angle shooting, Motion Tracking, etc. Asus has added some new video features such as Object Focus, HyperSteady, Free Zoom, Wind Filter, Mic Focus, etc. Since the same camera can be used for selfies, you can shoot front-facing videos of up to 8K resolution!
The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip has a 5,000mAH battery with 30W fast wired charging. While the vanilla Zenfone 8 has it, the Zenfone 8 Flip lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack, but it does have stereo speakers. ZenUI 8, based on Android 11, runs out of the box.
In Europe, the 8GB + 256GB variant of the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip is priced at EUR 799.
