Asus Zenfone 5 Series announced – Zenfone 5Q, Zenfone 5 & Zenfone 5Z

At the Mobile World Congress, Asus has announced its all-new Zenfone 5 series phones that include three devices in three different price segments. The Asus Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 5 Lite (or Zenfone 5Q) are the mid-range phones while the Zenfone 5Z is the high-end flagship with the Snapdragon 845. Asus has always got the pricing for its phones wrong, but this time, it seems they got it right. The company has priced the base model of the 5Z (with Snapdragon 845) at $499 which shows the approach for aggressive pricing by the company.

One thing that most of us won’t like is the copy of iPhone X to add that notch on the top. Not just that, Asus has also added a vertical dual camera setup on the rear. The company proudly showed that the notch on their phones is smaller than the one on Fruit iPhone X (Yes, that’s how they presented it!).

The 5 Lite or 5Q is the smallest of the three and features a ‘notch-less’ 18:9 display with rounded corners. The phone has a nice build as there are 2.5D-contoured glass panels at front and rear. There is a metal frame on the side. The 3.5mm headphone jack is present on top along with the secondary mic whereas the micro USB port (no USB Type-C) and speaker grill are on the bottom side.

It is good to see a single slot for two SIMs as well as the microSD card (not hybrid slot!). So, if you want to use two SIMs but also want to add a microSD card, then you will be able to do that on the Zenfone 5Q. The volume rockers and power button are on the right side with the power button having the same concentric circle design which also makes it easy to differentiate between the power button and volume rockers.

On the rear, there is a dual camera setup with the fingerprint scanner placed below it. Just like the rear, there are dual cameras on the front too, with LED flash. Despite so much space on the bottom chin, Asus decided to go for the on-screen buttons, which is a poor use of space.

Now, let’s talk about the specifications. Here are the Asus Zenfne 5Q (Zenfone 5 Lite) Specifications –

After the 5 Lite or 5Q, we have the 5. It is the phone that sits between the 5Q and the 5Z. The phone looks pretty similar to the iPhone X from the front, thanks to that edge-to-edge display with the notch on top. Unlike the iPhone X, the notch on Zenfone 5 doesn’t have any dot projector or flood illuminator. It just contains the earpiece, sensors and the front camera. The phone is quite similar to iPhone X from the rear too as it has a vertical dual camera setup. The back has the concentric circle design that we have seen previously in Asus devices.  Just like the 5Q, the Asus Zenfone 5 has a glass and metal design with glass on the front as well as rear and a metal frame.

Due to that edge-to-edge display, the phone has an overall screen-to-body ratio of 90% which is impressive. The USB Type-C port is on the bottom, along with the 3.5mm headphone jack and speaker grill. There is a rear-facing fingerprint scanner, and the buttons are placed on the right. Unlike the Zenfone 5Q, the Zenfone 5 has a hybrid SIM slot which means you have the option to either add a second SIM or a microSD card.

Now, let’s come to the Asus Zenfone 5 Specifications –

  • 6.2-inch Full HD+ (2246 by 1080) Super IPS+ display with Gorilla Glass Protection

ASUS ZENFONE 5Z – DESIGN AND SPECIFICATIONS

Asus Zenfone 5Z

Asus Zenfone 5Z

The Zenfone 5Z is the phone that will compete with the flagships of this year like the Galaxy S9, OnePlus 6, etc. as it packs high-end specifications. The design is similar to the Zenfone 5 with the same edge-to-edge display with a notch, glass, and metal design, vertical dual camera on the rear and a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. In fact, it is the Zenfone with some upgraded specs.

Here are the Asus Zenfone 5Z specifications –

  • 6.2-inch Full HD+ (2246 by 1080) Super IPS+ display
  • 90% screen-to-body ratio
  • Snapdragon 845 Processor with Adreno 630 GPU
  • 6/8GB RAM along with 64/128/256GB internal storage
  • Dual Rear Cameras – 12MP main camera with Sony IMX363 with f/1.8 aperture & 1.4µm pixel size+ 120-degree wide-angle secondary camera
  • 4K UHD (3840 by 2160) video at 30 fps with main rear camera
  • 8MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture and 84° field of view
  • 3,300mAh battery with Fast Charging
  • Android Oreo with ZenUI 5.0
  • Dual Speakers, Hi-Res Audio, USB Type-C, Fingerprint Scanner, 3.5mm headphone jack and NFC
  • Color Options – Meteor Silver, and Midnight Blue

Well, that was all about the design and specifications of all the three new Zenfone 5 phones and the specs look promising. Also, the Zenfone 5Z starts from $499 which is a great pricing considering that it has a Snapdragon 845 processor. The pricing for other two Zenfones isn’t yet officially revealed so stay tuned for that.
